Multiples sources have confirmed to InsideCarolina.com that Harrelson's departure is due to academics.
Harrelson was listed as a starter in UNC's preseason depth chart.
The 6-2, 195-pound Chesapeake, Va. native was suspended for two games last September for a violation of team rules and later dismissed from the program by then-interim head coach Everett Withers. Harrelson intended to transfer but met with Fedora in January and was given an opportunity to return to the team.
The fifth-year senior returned five punts and made three special teams tackles in seven games in 2011 after switching from receiver to cornerback due to injuries in the secondary.
Harrelson was an all-state wide receiver and cornerback at Oscar Smith High School and recorded three catches during his first two seasons at UNC -- the biggest being a pivotal 28-yard reception in the final minute of regulation against Tennessee in the 2010 Music City Bowl. He also returned 11 kickoffs his sophomore season (averaging 23.0 yards per return).
