Tar Heels Tracking Cameron

Tar Heels Tracking Cameron

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Reggie Cameron might not be a familiar name to North Carolina fans just yet, but the Tar Heels coaching staff has the Garden State shooter on its radar.

Cameron, a class of 2013 forward, provided some insight while at Nike's Skills U camp into where things stand with the Tar Heels.

"After Boo Williams maybe," the 6-foot-7, 221-pounder said of when UNC got involved with him following the late April tournament. "Yeah, after Boo Williams they called my coach and then they called me a couple times. They called my dad."

Just what was it that Cameron heard when he first received contact from North Carolina?

"They just said that they need a shooter, they need somebody to knock down shots," Cameron said. "And they said they're going to watch me at Peach Jam and then let me know what's up from there."

Cameron, who attends Hudson Catholic (N.J.), noted that it is assistant coach Steve Robinson who he has been in touch with from UNC.

"He called me probably about three or four times," Cameron said. "We've spoken over text. He's talked to my dad a couple times."

The rising senior, who has yet to speak with Roy Williams, went into a bit more detail about his relationship with Robinson.

"It's cool, just like every other coach, he keeps it real with me," Cameron said. "He tells me what he's looking for, what he thinks I need to do better."

Cameron, who said he is "definitely" interested in UNC, discussed how he feels he would fit into the Tar Heels' system.

"I know they run a great system, they get open shots," he said. "I think I'd fit in there really well."

There is one player currently on the North Carolina roster with whom Cameron has a relationship.

"Desmond Hubert, he used to play for the Playaz," Cameron said, "so that's my man."

Asked if Hubert, a rising sophomore, has tried to recruit him to Chapel Hill at all, Cameron replied, "He hit me up one time talking about how much he liked it down there."

However, Cameron noted that what Hubert said will not be much of a factor for him.

"No, not really," Cameron said. "North Carolina is a great place."

In terms of his recruitment as a whole, Cameron listed a plethora of scholarship offers from coast to coast. He said he holds offers from Miami, Florida, West Virginia, Oklahoma State, USC, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Cincinnati, DePaul, Xavier, Northwestern, North Carolina State, Villanova, and others.

North Carolina and Indiana are the schools on his list that have yet to extend a scholarship offer.

Thus far, Cameron has been on unofficial visits to Seton Hall, Villanova and Rutgers. He hopes to take some more trips soon.

"I'm trying to get to a bunch of schools in August and September," Cameron said.

On whether there are any specific colleges he wants to check out, Cameron remarked, "No, nobody in particular. Me and my dad have got to talk about it after Peach Jam."

Cameron has a good idea of when he will be making his commitment and that time is fast approaching. He said he will likely decide in between his birthday – Sept. 10 - and late September.

"Just a place where I can get a great education, [a place where] I'll develop individually as a player and where I can win a lot," Cameron said of what he is looking for in a school. "I like winning."

In addition to recruiting, Cameron also talked about his experience so far at Nike Skills U, which is being held at T.C. Williams High School.

"It's great, started at Kevin (Durant Skills Academy) and going to LeBron (James Skills Academy), then coming here," Cameron said. "It's been great, everything has been real competitive and I'm having a good time."

The chance to go up against other talented players is something that Cameron feels has aided him as a player.

"It's helped my game a lot," he said. "I get to measure myself up against the other better players in the country and I like it. Everybody is competing."

So, how does Cameron think he compares to those other top players from all over the country?

"I stack up really well," Cameron said. "I think I hold my own whenever I play."
