UNC 'Perfect Fit' for Jackson

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- Joseph Jackson made it official on Wednesday, signing his Letter of Intent during a ceremony at First Coast High School. InsideCarolina.com spoke to defensive standout after he put on the UNC hat …

How much consideration did you give to other schools that offered you late, like Ohio State?
"Schools like that are a no-brainer to consider, but I was set on picking UNC and it felt right to me, which led me to close the door on any other decisions. "

Why did you decide to stick with UNC?
"UNC is a great place. That's where I took my visit. It is where it fit for me academically, socially and athletically. It was just a well-rounded environment that fit me perfectly."

What was your in-home visit like with assistant coach Dan Disch and Larry Fedora and what role did that play in your decision?
"That was great. I mean I got to talk with Coach Fedora and Coach Disch and they were both able to talk to me about their program and how I was going to fit into their scheme."

How does your position fit in with UNC's new defensive scheme?
"The nickel back position fits me very well because that is similar to what I play now, linebacker/safety, so fitting into that and transitioning into that scheme will be a piece of cake. This new position (spur) will allow me to use my versatility, because I feel like I'm an open-field player, so being in the open is where I gain my advantages at against the opposition."

What are some of your favorite aspects of UNC?
"The campus was great and its atmosphere. I couldn't ask for a better place."

What does it mean to you to be a Tar Heel?
"Oh, it means a lot, there is a lot of tradition there, a lot of great players and players that have excelled to the NFL, as well as in the workforce."

What do you expect to accomplish in your first year of college?
"Well I definitely want to finish my classes and take care of that and get out of school in 3 ½ years with a degree. That is my goal and my expectations for myself. On the field I want to work as hard as I can and hopefully get some playing time in my first year and be a factor in the game."

How close did you get in bringing teammate Reggie Northrup with you to UNC?
(Laughing) "Oh I definitely wanted to bring Northrup. He's my buddy, but I want what is best for him and he thought FSU was a good fit for him, so I am happy for him."

InsideCarolina.com also talked with First Coast High School head coach Martin Lee about Jackson's future at UNC.

Why do think Jackson will be a good fit for UNC?
"Joseph is going to be a perfect fit. He is a very coachable young man. He is a 'yes sir,' 'no sir' type of guy and he works hard and he runs very well in the open-space. I knew Coach Disch when he used to coach here and the type of defense he wants and what they are trying to put together - the attacking style defense – there is no doubt in my mind he will be a major contributor to North Carolina football."

How will Jackson's versatility be a factor in UNC's 4-2-5 defense?
"That is what made him feel comfortable about staying with UNC, after talking with Coach Disch and Fedora and explaining how he will fit in their system that is what made him feel comfortable in choosing UNC. He is a very versatile player that if he puts on some more weight he could move inside, along with being on the outside. One thing he was for us this season was a great defender and defending in the open-field, being able to cover the slot was big for us. In this day and age you have to be able to do that. Jackson will be a nice fit for North Carolina's defense."
