Summers Makes Switch

Greensboro (N.C.) Page quarterback James Summers has switched his commitment from NC State to North Carolina. "I feel like it's a better place now for me," he said.

Summers, a 6-foot-2, 196-pound signal caller who ran the spread offense at Page, had committed to NC State back on April 14, over offers from UNC, Clemson and East Carolina.

He led Page to the 4AA state title in 2011 -- earning MVP honors for 11-of-16 passing for 131 yards and two touchdowns, and 116 yards on 14 rushes, plus recorded an interception on defense -- and was runner up for AP state player of the year. As a senior he completed 93-of-188 passes for 1,506 yards and 20 touchdowns and rushed 185 times for 1631 yards and 22 scores. His junior totals were 1,623 yards and 21 touchdowns on 102-of-207 passing, and 1,267 yards and 16 touchdowns on 175 rushes.

Did you change from NC State to Carolina?
"Yeah, I did change ... I really did, yup - I feel like it's a better place now for me."

What caused you to make that decision?
"The new offense that they run over there, and the competition there, I feel like it's a better place for me to go on with my career -- and have a better chance to make things happen up there."

You met with Coach Fedora the other day - what did he tell you?
"He told me what was up there - what he had - he was straight up front and said I could come in and compete and maybe have a chance to start my freshman year. I like that and I like my chances over there."

What position did he talk about you playing?
"Quarterback - definitely quarterback. They run the same offense as here at Page, so that's huge."

Did you know it would blow up on Twitter like that?
"I don't have Twitter myself, because I don't like stuff like that. But (Eric) Ebron was telling me 'You're blowing up on Twitter' and I told him to keep it at a minimum and he said 'I can try, but it's hard right now.''"

With Larry Fedora coming in, what do you think he'll bring to that program?
"A lot of greatness. He's a good man and he brings in good kids. His whole personality will set a whole 'nother mood through Carolina. And I think the Carolina people will like him a lot.

And he's an energetic guy ...
"He's fired up. He's a nice guy when he sits on your couch, but I can tell he'll be tough on the field so I'm ready for that, too."
