Opening comments:
“We’re very pleased with the outcome. Probably like {UNC Asheville head coach] Eddie [Biedenbach], I would have liked to have played better and I’m sure he would have liked for his club to play better, but it is early in the season. It was a little bit of a difficult turnaround, but at the same time, Asheville played Friday night as well. The biggest thing for us was the three-time zone thing trying to get ourselves back into what would be normal and we don’t feel like we’re that.

“We had a tremendous size advantage inside and we tried to make sure that that was an important factor in the game. We had hoped that we would really hold their 3-point percentage down. We knew they were going to shoot a lot of them. We hoped that we were going to do that and we hoped that we were going to do a better job on the backboards than we did against Michigan State. We still weren’t smooth by any means, but it was a big-time crowd here. I hope everybody enjoyed themselves. I think it was a wonderful opening for UNC Asheville and I think they’re really going to have a big-time basketball team for them.

“We’re just bigger and we’ve got to use that to our advantage. Their shooters can really shoot, so we tried to make sure that we got out and bottled them.

“All in all, it’s been a weird four or five days. The experiences that we’ve had over the last four or five days – some of them have been sensational and things that we’ll remember forever. It was a little difficult for me with so many thoughts going through my mind.

“I really was hoping that they would honor Jerry Green during the game as well and I don’t know if they did that at halftime or not, but he’s so important to this basketball program. That’s another reason that I’ll always have great memories here because of what Jerry did. He’s such a great friend of mine and one of the most loyal friends I have in the whole wide world. It’s a wonderful setting and a big-time gym and I think it will be a great home-court advantage for the Bulldogs.”

Were you impressed that the guys seemed to have their legs after the trip out west?
“We try to condition pretty hard. As much as we like to run, you have to practice doing that. I’ve got to get a little more solid play from our guys coming off the bench. I’d like to get a few more minutes. I know Reggie had 10 and P.J. has 11. James Michael has nine, but I’d probably like to get them a few more minutes right now because I think there’s going to be a time when they have to play more minutes for us.

"But at the same time, but you have to do the best you can to get those five guys who earned the starting lineup to make sure that they’re getting their legs underneath them so that they can play. There’s a stamina question, also. Sometimes fatigue makes cowards of us all and I want to make sure that we can get through that point, too.”

On UNC’s 10-3 run to close the first half:
“A team like Asheville, they’re going to make runs, so for us to make a run at the end of the half, I think that was big for us.”

Do you feel more comfortable with the offense this year?
“Definitely. When you know what you’re getting into, it’s a lot easier. That’s the thing that people don’t take lightly, especially in college basketball, is having upperclassmen and having people that have been around the program to know what’s expected from the coach. It’s been an easier transition this year than last year. I know my teammates; they know me. We enjoy playing and we know what each other likes to do, so it’s definitely a lot easier this year than last year.”

TYLER ZELLER

It looked like you were frustrated early with missing shots:
“Yeah, just simple shots. It’s always frustrating when you make good moves and you get to the layup and you miss it. So it was something that I needed to settle down a little bit, and once I settled down, I was alright.”

Did the travel wear on you more than you thought it might?
“Probably the roughest part was just sleep. Like last night, we didn’t want to go to sleep because we were used to being up later. But I think everybody did a great job and I don’t think we’ll have to do that again this year, so we got it out of the way and we can move on.”

JACKSON SIMMONS

Was this past week just about the perfect start to your college career? Playing on an aircraft carrier and then playing near home?
“Yes. We won both games. We’re 2-0. That adds a little bit to it. But yes, it’s been a great week, but we realize as a team that it’s just the beginning – 2-0 is a great start to that journey where we hopefully at the end want to be playing in New Orleans in April.”
