"I wouldn't go to any other school except for UNC, because I have a good relationship with Coach Butch Davis."
Willis' grandmother lives in Burlington, N.C.
Willis, a defensive tackle who played his prep career at Duncan (S.C.) Byrnes, enrolled at UNC in January 2010 but transferred to UCLA in August to be closer to a job his father took at the time.
"[The transfer] is going through the works," Willis said. "I'm applying for the waiver to see if the NCAA will not make me sit out another year. But, it's a definite thing even if I have to sit out. I've been released already [by UCLA] and I have been talking to UNC to try to get me back admitted."
Willis' father will also move back into the Carolinas.
"He'll be back before I will or maybe we'll get there the same time," Willis said.
NCAA wavier or not, Willis figures to enroll back into UNC for the first summer semester this year.
"It's a good move," Willis said. "I didn't burn any bridges. I left on a good note and Coach understood why I was leaving. When I called him and asked him would it be ok to come back, he welcomed me with open arms.
"I think it's a good move and I think everything happens for a reason… Sometimes life doesn't go exactly how you plan it, but you have to deal with what you have."
Willis, who was rated a four-star recruit out of high school, originally verbally committed to Tennessee. However, just as he was about to leave for Knoxville, Willis discovered that head coach Lane Kiffin had left Tennessee for the same position at Southern California. The move resulted in Willis deciding to instead enroll at UNC.
