Q&A with Steve Robinson

Posted Apr 15, 2003

Inside Carolina talks briefly with new UNC assistant coach Steve Robinson, former assistant at Kansas and the former head coach at Florida State.

What were you thinking while watching Roy Williams get introduced today as the head coach at UNC?

I’m really happy – I’m happy for him. I’m happy that he’s getting to come back. I know how hard it is on him. I know it was a very difficult decision for him to make because he cares. If he didn’t care, then I think it’d have been easier to go. There are some coaches in the past that wouldn’t have had a team meeting before he left to tell them. Some would get out of town and say the heck with it. But because he cared about those kids he wanted to make sure they understand that he gave them everything they had during the time he was their head coach and during the 15 years he was the head coach at the University of Kansas. He gave everything he had to try and make that program as successful as it possibly could be.

And you personally? You’re now a coach at the University of North Carolina. What does that mean to you? I see me saying that produced a nice smile on your face …

I’ll go back to my room this evening and pinch myself. I’ve been a head coach in the ACC, I come back as an assistant at North Carolina, I’ve been at Kansas. I think I’ve been very fortunate to be at some of the top programs in the country, and to be a part of them. I think having the opportunity to work with Coach Williams is something that for the rest of my life I’ll always remember.

You think Carolina Blue is something you can get used to after playing against them for a couple of years?

I can wear it very well.

How quickly will get you into the office and start working?

We’ll get started with some stuff tomorrow and try to do a few things the best we can.

In terms of recruiting, is that something you can get started on right away?

You never stop with recruiting. It’s non-stop and it goes 24 hours, seven days a week.
