CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Did you miss what assistant coach Joe Holladay said on Roy Williams's radio program Wednesday night? Here are some excerpts from the live call-in show hosted by Woody Durham ...

On Roy out recruiting:
“Tonight he’s out on the west coast and he’ll see somebody play [on Monday] evening. We’re in finals right now so we give our kids a couple of days off since we’re not playing until Saturday. He’ll be on the west coast again tomorrow and will see somebody usually in the morning, go by the school for practice in the afternoon and maybe a game that night. [On Tuesday], he’ll get on a red eye and come back from San Diego and get back at 9:30am. We’re going to practice at noon – the reason we’re practicing at noon is that it’s a reading day – and then he’s going to be in the northeast watching somebody work out at 4:30pm tomorrow afternoon.”

On the recruiting process:
“He tries to watch everything that they do. One time we had a big-time player from Iowa – he’s gone now, so I can talk about him. Raef Lafrentz was his name. He ended up being taken second in the draft and he was a first-team All American when we were at Kansas. His folks came to watch us play at Kansas, so after the game, his parents were down there and [Roy] said, ‘Mom, did you see everything you wanted to see?’ She said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘Did you watch our team and see how we were executing?’ And she said, ‘No, I watched every move you made the whole game on that bench. I didn’t even watch the game, I wanted to see how you acted.’ And he said, ‘I hope I was decent.’ So we got the young man and he had a great career for us. But sometimes it works the other way.”

On John Henson playing less than normal against Long Beach State:
“John Henson was limited on Saturday. He’s got a jammed thumb, so he probably played about 20 minutes. You could tell in the ball game. We threw him a lob pass for a dunk that he would normally just dunk, but he – I don’t know what he did with it – but it went right over the goal. He couldn’t dunk the basketball, he couldn’t get a rebound, so he played 19 minutes…

“You people here are all big fans, you’ve seen John shoot free throws, so in a tight basketball game, he’s not going to be in at the end… He’s not going to be in at the end until he starts showing that he can make free throws. So we all feel for him going through this, shooting some air balls and shooting [with] no telling where it’s going to go on free throws right now. But he’s played extremely well defensively for us, but that’s why his time was limited”

Do you think the week off will help the thumb mend itself?
“Yes. Our trainer and our orthopedic both think the thumb will… It’s just the worst thing to jam for a basketball player.”

On Reggie Bullock and Harrison Barnes in the post:
“During the game the other night, I heard Coach tell one of the assistants, ‘I need to Reggie and Harrison down on my end before practice and see if they can post up.’ Because we think they can post people up. They’re 6-foot-7 and they’ve got good moves, but they haven’t done it in a game yet where it’s been successful.”

On Leslie McDonald:
“I was impressed with him the other night when he hit those five treys. That will get him some playing time. If he hits five treys every game, he’s going to get a lot of playing time. Defensively, he works very hard. He’s good at chasing around screens. He fouls a little too much. Ball handling, taking care of the basketball, he’ll make some sloppy turnovers, but he’ll get some more playing time. Guys who can make shots will end up playing. I mean, that’s the name of the game.

“That’s what it comes down to. When you look back at Danny Green, Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington, Raymond Felton, Rashad McCants and Jawad Williams – you just go back, but the guys who can make shots… That’s the name of the game. You can play great defense, but you can just play defense so long. You’ve got to put the ball in the hole.”

On the series with Texas:
“I think it’s a four-year contract. I don’t do the scheduling and I’m not involved with this, but two of them are going to be played on neutral courts. We played in Dallas last year. If you remember, we opened up the new Cowboys Stadium. I think we had 48,000 in attendance. It took us about 15 minutes from the time we pulled into the stadium to get over to our locker room. We had four motorcycle policemen inside the stadium just moving people out of the way because it’s a whole city underneath there. They raised the scoreboard – it cost them $1 million just to raise the scoreboard up a few feet just so we could play. So that’s why we’re playing in Greensboro, and then I think it will be a home-and-home.”
