Yates, Coples, Mangum Named Team MVPs

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- North Carolina quarterback T.J. Yates, defensive tackle Quinton Coples and defensive back Pete Mangum were named the Tar Heels' Most Valuable Players at the 2010 senior football banquet Friday evening.

Yates received a standing ovation after earning the team's offensive MVP honors. A native of Marietta, Ga., Yates became the first quarterback in UNC history to throw for more than 3,000 yard in a season and 9,000 in a career. He finished the regular season by completing 259 of 383 attempts for 3,184 yards and 18 touchdowns. He was the most accurate passer in the ACC in 2010, completing more than 67 percent of his attempts.

Coples earned first-team All-ACC honors this year after a stellar season at defensive tackle. A 6-6, 275-pound native of Kinston, N.C., Coples finished the regular season with 14 tackles for losses and 8.5 sacks. He was also named a second-team All-America by Scout.com.

Mangum, a walk-on from Raleigh, N.C., became one of the top special teams players this year on kickoff returns. Mangum was also recognized as the Scholar-Athlete Award winner. Head Coach Davis remarked that the 17 seniors "would never be forgotten" for the way they persevered this year in the face of adversity. Thirteen of Carolina's 17 seniors will graduate on Dec. 19. The other four are on track to graduate in May.
