UNC-Wyoming: Game Notes

Posted Mar 24, 2003

CHAPEL HILL – The North Carolina Tar Heels are still playing basketball, and they are having a lot of fun doing so. And their fans, they are providing the Tar Heels with the energy to continue advancing in the National Invitation Tournament, as they did on Monday night with a 90-74 victory over Wyoming.

Here is a look at some of the notes from UNC’s 19th win in 34 games.

***The Tar Heels are now 1-0 all-time against the Cowboys.

***UNC is just one win away from its 20th of the season, which would give the program a minimum of 20 wins in 32 of the last 33 seasons.

***Although the crowd was 20,235 the game was still a sellout and every seat appeared to be used. The reason the total was nearly 1,300 less than a usual sellout is because there were no student risers, and the sideline seats across from the benches did not extend as far out as usual.

***Rashad McCants’ 20-point effort gives him at least 20 points in 11 games this season.

***McCants now has 568 points, the second most ever by a UNC freshman. He passed Sam Perkins (550 in the 1980-81 season) and is now just 32 points behind Joseph Forte, who had 600 points in the 1999-2000 campaign.

***Felton’s 15 points and 14 assists gives him three double-doubles in his last five games. He also did so against Duke and Maryland.

***Melvin Scott’s 20 points were a career high. His previous high was 19 points in UNC’s win over Maryland in the ACC tournament.

***Scott had no turnovers in 34 minutes of action, which means he has just one turnover in his last 134 minutes of game action.

***Carolina’s 90 points was its second highest total of the season (UNC had 93 against N.C. A&T). This is the fourth time in the last five games UNC has scored at least 80 points. They did so only five times in the first 29 games.

***All five starters had more assists than turnovers for the first time all season.
