Elleby Out For Season

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina senior defensive tackle Greg Elleby suffered a torn ACL against East Carolina on Saturday and is done for the season, according to UNC head coach Butch Davis.

"Greg Elleby, in the course of the game, suffered a knee injury," Davis told reporters during his Monday press conference. "You saw him kind of hobble off. They did a MRI [on Sunday] and he's got a torn ACL. So Greg will be lost for the remainder of the season."

The fifth-year senior, hailing from Tabor City, N.C., switched from offensive guard back to defensive tackle following the season-opening loss to LSU due to depth issues along the defensive line. He had one tackle to his credit in three games played this season at tackle.

“Greg is a great kid and did everything we ever asked of him, whether that meant he played as a starter, a backup or whether he was on the offensive line or the defensive line,” Davis said. “He did everything he could to make the team better.”

Elleby spent his first three seasons in Chapel Hill on the defensive line, but moved to offensive guard following the 2008 season after a rash of injuries and attrition. He started four games at guard and played 284 snaps last fall.
